The second blog in our #LifeatNovetta series comes from Information Exploitation Project Manager Jessica Bazoalto. Jessica manages a big data analytics and visualization capability for DoD customers. Here’s her take on learning and growth opportunities at Novetta.
I’m very thankful to be able to write about several growth and learning opportunities Novetta has offered me to broaden my knowledge and sharpen my skills. This is precisely why I’m excited about the topic of this blog and one of the many reasons why I love my life at Novetta. These are my top 5 growth and learning opportunities since joining Novetta.
Not long after I joined Novetta, an email invitation was extended to all employees offering accounts for Learn Smart training courses, covering a wide range of topics. Signing up meant access to 2 or 3 years of online training at no cost to the employee. Additionally, they offered an incentive of one of the following three options: an iPad, a $500 Amazon gift card, or a $500 Apple gift card.
You’re probably thinking—let me get this straight—Novetta offered free training to employees and an incentive to do it? Uh, yeah. It was a no brainer, right? So I signed up for LearnSmart, received my $500 Amazon gift card and completed my courses, which also helped me immensely in my career trajectory.
Agile/Scrum Master Training
I was offered the opportunity to become a Certified Scrum Master through two days in a Scrum Alliance training session. Once again, Novetta paid for the training and the exam.
I later learned that the reason Novetta offered this training was because initially a single employee requested it, and ultimately Novetta decided it was more cost effective and beneficial to the company to offer it to a larger group of employees. Since then, Novetta has continued to offer this group training benefit to many more employees.
PMP Bootcamp and Exam
‘Nuff said. Well…not really, I will say a few words about this. For years I’d been wanting to get my PMP. As a Project Manager and contractor, I knew it was practically essential to my career growth. And for many reasons which range from personal to professional, it was just never the ‘right time.’ Until I came to Novetta. I talked with my manager about getting my PMP and we put it in my annual performance objectives. He gladly agreed to pay for the boot camp and the exam. So, after many years of procrastination, or should I say anticipation, I finally signed up for the boot camp and PMP exam! I am happy to report that as of February, I am a PMP.
It’s also worth mentioning that as soon as I signed up for the boot camp and exam, someone from HR emailed me to see if I already submitted payment. He told me that If I hadn’t yet paid, Novetta would pay for it and if I already paid, I just needed to provide my receipts and Novetta would reimburse me immediately. Yes, that’s right, someone actually proactively reached out to me to ensure I got my money expeditiously, and not the other way around!
Earlier this summer, an email came across my inbox regarding a two day Amazon Web Services (AWS) Symposium that was going to be held in D.C. the following week. I really wanted to go and emailed my manager to request permission to attend. Despite the last minute request, he fully supported my attendance as he knew it would be a good learning opportunity and an even better networking opportunity.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect Bootcamp and Exam
I attended the AWS re:Invent conference last month in Vegas, which is pretty cool in its own right (I heard attendance doubled from last year’s conference), but Novetta also paid for me to complete a boot camp course and to take the AWS-Certified Solutions Architect exam. Learn more about AWS re:Invent from our blog recap.
I’m sure by now you’re starting to realize that the growth and learning opportunities offered at Novetta are plentiful, paid for, and fun. Oh, and they also help me advance in my career and expand my knowledge base.
