Being a young adult is hard. After spending sixteen years (usually even more than that) in school, and four or five years waiting tables or folding clothes, the transition to a real job is a lot like a waterslide. You don’t really know what the splash at the end of the pool is going to be like, and you can’t tell how close you are to it, but it’s coming. You know those waterslides that end with a giant funnel, and it dumps you into a pool? That’s a lot like starting your first career job.
The transition between a college-level job and a career can be pretty rough, but Novetta kept a lot of things consistent for me. The first and only time I wore a suit to work was for my interview; since then, my jeans have gotten more wear than my pencil skirt.
Jacob Edmonson, Discovery Analyst, tells me Novetta made the shift to a new job easy for him because of its relaxed atmosphere. “The first impression is what really sold Novetta. Fellow employees are nice and I’m generally free to manage myself.” After his first interview, Edmonson says he was invited to attend a Python training session, which made him feel welcome within the company before he was hired. He appreciates that Novetta’s aura isn’t “super serious”, but people outside of the company still respect its name.
Marshall Demaree, Application Developer, also enjoys Novetta’s casual atmosphere. He recalls how he feels comfortable dropping in on the Columbia office at any time and chatting with the directors that work there. “It never feels like there’s a gap between management and employees,” he says.
For most of us, the stability of a promising future is more important than feeling comfortable challenging the VP to a shuffleboard match. Novetta gives its employees a sense of security that most millennials are starving for. We’re all just a few years away from getting kicked off our parent’s healthcare plans, and despite just joining the workforce, we all should have started that retirement plan while filling out college applications. Edmonson is grateful for Novetta’s affordable healthcare options, and the variety of plans to choose from.
We also don’t have to worry about being stuck in a job just because it looks good on a resume; Novetta lets its employees choose a position they want. we can shop around the company for something more challenging or exciting before we start blasting our resumes elsewhere.
For someone who is still new to the whole “adulting” thing, Novetta has made things pretty easy for me, while still providing me with plenty of challenges. Not only have I learned to distinguish between pythons in the Amazon and Python in the cyber world, but I can go to the doctor and know my copay is covered. If only I had the nerve to pick up the phone and call for an appointment.
