The launch of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Rekognition, in November 2016, represented a significant milestone in the market based on its negligible start-up costs, volume-based pricing model, and streamlined application programming interfaces. Cloud-based face recognition services, like Rekognition, have the potential to complement or disrupt traditional face recognition solutions used for security, fraud detection, and identification applications, such as watchlisting. This whitepaper presents results from two separate performance evaluations of Rekognition – first comparing Rekognition performance to face recognition tools commonly used in entry-level face processing applications, then comparing Rekognition performance to cloud services from Microsoft and Kairos.
