In April, Novetta Mission Analytics and the Machine Learning Center of Excellence, supported by our partners at AWS, responded to the exploding “infodemic” surrounding COVID-19. Our joint effort was aimed at developing an advanced machine learning tool to help key stakeholders quickly identify and respond to harmful misinformation about the virus and vital public health measures.
In less than 30 days, we developed our Rapid Narrative Analysis (RNA) capability, an integrated set of processes and tools for performing highly accurate sentiment analysis, bot detection, and network analysis on hundreds of thousands of social media items. Central to our work is a novel concept we introduced to social media analysis: virulence. Evolving from the measure of virality, which determines how widely a piece of misinformation is circulating online, we also focus on virulence to indicate what of that viral content is most harmful (i.e. most convincing to its audience).
Novetta is now using RNA to support the Africa CDC’s response to rampant misinformation surrounding life-saving vaccines for COVID-19 and other dangerous diseases in Africa.
