Novetta Mission Analytics (NMA) is being used to monitor continent-wide public sentiment of non-pharmaceutical interventions (self-isolation, social distancing, hand washing, business closures, etc.) and detect misinformation/rumors for COVID-19 in support of policy-making decisions for the Africa Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Analysts use NMA to derive real-time pattern and behavioral analysis by collating open source content from traditional media (web-based and broadcast) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp) and enriching the data with machine learning and human-in-the-loop processes. This analysis serves as operational support for CDCs in each of the African Union member states. The insight derived from our NMA processes is featured in the Partnership for Evidence-Based Response to COVID-19 (PERC) Decision Support Dashboard allowing key stakeholders to rapidly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa.
NMA is actively combating disinformation.

Novetta Mission Analytics identifies influential speech, key messages, and relationships between speakers and groups across traditional and social media. Using a unique, quote-based, human-in-the-loop data curation process, Novetta Mission Analytics deconstructs the information environment, maps adversarial actions, and measures hidden strategies. This process generates the most accurate, specific, and customized data for social and traditional media analysis.
Coverage of Russian elections illustrates Novetta Mission Analytics’ ability to provide insights into disinformation campaigns. Analysis from December 2017 to March 2018 revealed that Russian elections were a disproportionately major theme in Russian media messaging, resulting in unexpected and disruptive resonance in the European and Russian media environment.
Using Novetta Mission Analytic’s analytic framework, we determined that major, concurrent non-election stories above were manipulated to drive attention to Russian elections. Russian officials leveraged the attention from major stories to accuse other countries of meddling in Russia’s domestic elections, even if countries were only reacting to Russian actions. This pattern exemplifies a media strategy of high-volume noise and low-volume consistency in media environments.
Novetta Mission Analytics empowers organizations to plan strategic messaging, amplify specific themes, track trends over time, measure the impact of their strategy, and fine-tune based on empirical data. Applications include humanitarian outreach, countering propaganda, and information dissemination.
Novetta Mission Analytics helped drive participation in urgently-needed clinical studies to fight contagious disease in Liberia. In this environment, fear of Ebola made the community vulnerable to disinformation and rumor. Novetta Mission Analytics monitored and analyzed local media for erroneous information on disease trends; within 24 hours of discovery, Novetta coordinated with NGO partners to contact news outlets, provide accurate information, and alert the National Public Health Institute of Liberia and JFK Hospital. As a result, the program reached its enrolment targets faster than in any previous study.
